Writing Impactful Bullet Points

Your resume's bullet points are where you prove your value to potential employers. UC Berkeley Career Center emphasizes that strong bullet points follow a clear formula: action verb + task + result or impact. This structure transforms mundane job duties into compelling achievement statements.

Instead of writing "Handled customer complaints," try "Resolved 95% of customer complaints within 24 hours, increasing satisfaction scores by 30%." The difference is quantifiable impact. NYU Wasserman Center for Career Development notes that numbers catch attention and provide context for your accomplishments.

Yale Office of Career Strategy recommends the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for crafting powerful bullet points. You don't need all four elements in each bullet, but incorporating results whenever possible strengthens your narrative.

Avoid starting bullets with "Responsible for" or "Duties included"—these phrases focus on what you were supposed to do rather than what you achieved. Focus on outcomes: money saved, time reduced, efficiency improved, or problems solved. Even without specific metrics, describe the scope and impact of your work to help employers understand your contributions.
